Identify the kind of outside drain before requesting help. Rainwater drainage and a sanitary sewer need different reporting and service scopes. Oklahoma Drain Clear editorialReviewed 3 November 20264 min read[Plain-text version](/guides/outside-yard-storm-drain-or-sewer-backup/index.md) ## The short answer A yard inlet taking rainwater is different from a sewer cleanout connected to toilets and household plumbing. Do not open an unfamiliar cover or enter a drain structure to investigate. Tell the provider where the drain is, what normally flows into it and what you have already seen. ## Rainwater pooling near a yard inlet Leaves, sediment, a restricted outlet, grading and a damaged drain can each contribute to poor drainage. Surface pooling does not prove a household sewer clog. Describe whether the problem appears only during rain and whether street drainage is involved. Outdoor storm-drain clearing is not included in a household drain appointment unless the provider confirms it. ## Wastewater outside or a public manhole overflowing Keep clear of sewage and do not remove public covers. Use the relevant city reporting route when a public sewer may be involved. Tell the utility whether neighboring properties are affected and whether the flow appears at a public structure. Private-line clearing and wastewater cleanup remain separate service requests. ## How to reduce repeat surface blockages Where safe, keep loose leaves and litter away from surface inlets without reaching into them. Do not sweep waste into a storm drain. Recurring pooling warrants assessment of the drainage route and outlet rather than repeatedly treating it as an indoor sink clog. ## At a glance SituationNext stepKeep in mind Yard inlet pools during rainDescribe inlet and outlet locationConfirm outdoor drainage capability Street inlet or public manhole affectedUse local city reportingDo not open public covers Wastewater comes up at a house cleanoutStop using affected plumbing; keep clearPrivate and public assessment may differ ## Related service [Sewer Backup Help →](/services/sewer-backup-help/) [Find local utility and drain guidance for your city →](/coverage/) ## Sources & reading notes [Why sanitary sewers overflow](https://www.epa.gov/npdes/sanitary-sewer-overflow-sso-frequent-questions) General homeowner orientation.
